WILBRAHAM, July 14, 2009 – In a letter dated June 10, 2009, David Y. Terry, Program Director of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Drinking Water Program, informed Wilbraham Water Superintendent Michael Framarin that the Wilbraham Water Department again achieved one of the highest scores in the annual Massachusetts Public Drinking Water Award Program. However, in order to allow other systems to rise to a winning standard, the Awards Committee has a policy that a system who has won for 3 consecutive years is not eligible to receive
an award for one year. The Wilbraham Water Department has won in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and is therefore not eligible to receive the coveted award this year.
“We’ll try again next year”, says Framarin, who oversees the top notch operation with eagle eyes and never ending vigilance. “It’s encouraging, especially for my crew, to get recognition for putting in the extra effort it takes to become one of the best, but we don’t do it to receive an award, we do it because we take this job seriously and understand the risk to public health and welfare where the safety of drinking water is concerned.”
The DEP Drinking Water Program evaluates and rates public drinking water systems in Massachusetts according to strict criteria of compliance with drinking water regulations, administrative capacity, source protection, distribution treatment, disinfection and monitoring activities.
Public Works Director/Town Engineer Edmond Miga, Jr., is not surprised at the award: “Mike has been collecting top level awards for our water division since 1994 when he took over as superintendent. The town couldn’t ask for a more dedicated and capable professional in this position.”
David Barry, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, in a letter dated July 13, commended Framarin and his crew for their achievement and commitment to their job. “You and your crew have developed and maintain a level of service that can only be achieved with exceptional leadership, uncompromising attention to detail, and a well functioning teamwork environment. On behalf of all Wilbraham and Ludlow families whose drinking water is in your capable hands, thanks for giving us superb quality drinking water and peace of mind every time we turn on our faucets”.
