On 7/8/10 at approximately 1947hrs, Wilbraham Police received a 911 call regarding a person in the water at Spec Pond Recreation Area, 2540 Boston Rd. The 911 caller reported that he believed the person had disappeared under water and might be drowning.
 
Wilbraham Police and Fire/EMS Units dispatched.
 
Upon arrival, Police Officers were met by Wilbraham Recreation Department Lifeguards, who were conducting a search for the victim. Police Officers Christian Letendre, Thomas Korzec and Jeffrey Rudinski entered the water with the assistance of lifeguards and a few other bystanders. Offficer Harold Swift remained on-shore conducting command and radio control. Officers formed a line-search and moments later detected a 22 year old male submerged in 10-12 feet of water. He was brought to the surface by Officer Christian Letendre and pulled to shore by rescuers. Wilbraham Fire Dept. Paramedics were waiting on shore and immediately began resuscitation efforts in the awaiting ambulance. The victim was transported by Wilbraham Fire Dept. ambulance to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
 
The victim has been identified as Carlos S. Torres, age 22, of 774 State St in Springfield.
 
Investigation by Wilbraham Police revealed that the victim had come to the pond with several friends to swim. One of the witnesses observed the victim go under water and not surface.
 
An investigation is continuing in this matter by Wilbraham Police, as well as State Police CPAC detectives. An autopsy was conducted and investigators are awaiting results from the Medical Examiners Office. The incident appears to be accidental at this time.
