Student Awareness of Fire Education
Did you know that children five years and younger have one of the worst fire death rates?
Did you know that preschool children have unusually high rates of burn injury?
We are very excited to tell you about a program that your child will be participating in at their child care center. This safety program will teach your child and you fire safety skills to help save your and your child’s life.
Learn not to Burn
The Learn Not to Burn Preschool Program teaches eight fire safety lessons – lessons that we hope you might want to share with the rest of the family. These lessons include:
To stay away from hot things that can hurt
To tell a grown-up when you find matches or lighters
To "Stop, Drop, Cover, and Roll" if your clothes catch on fire
To cool a burn
To crawl low under smoke
To know the sound of the smoke detector / alarm
To practice an escape plan
To recognize the firefighter as a helper
The children will learn many skills; but remember, fire safety is ultimately the parents’ responsibility. It is difficult for children to react to all fire and smoke situations in the appropriate manner.
Key Points to Remember
Never leave children unattended. Children may start fires or become involved in fires when left alone
Keep matches and lighters in a safe area away from small children
Have a working smoke detector outside each sleeping area, and make sure to test the smoke detector monthly
Design and practice a fire escape plan for your home. Practice with the entire family at least four times a year
