Springfield St - Stony Hill Rd Intersection Improvement Project
Springfield St-Stony Hill Rd Intersection Improvement Project
Project Overview
The Springfield Street/Stony Hill Road Intersection Improvement Project aims to enhance traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and overall accessibility at this key intersection in Wilbraham. The project is part of the town’s broader Complete Streets Initiative, which prioritizes infrastructure improvements for all modes of transportation, including vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Key Improvements
- Intersection Redesign: A left-turn lane will be added on Springfield Street to improve traffic efficiency and reduce congestion.
- Traffic Signal Upgrades: The existing outdated traffic signal equipment will be replaced with modernized systems to enhance safety and visibility.
- Pedestrian Infrastructure: New sidewalks will be installed on the west side of Stony Hill Road and the north side of Springfield Street, improving walkability and connectivity.
- Crosswalk Enhancements: A crosswalk will be added to connect the Senior Center/Town Hall Driveway, ensuring safer pedestrian access. A second crosswalk linking the new sidewalks will be added across the northern side of the intersection crossing Stony Hill Road.
- Roadway Adjustments: The project will address awkward lane alignments on Springfield Street to create a more streamlined traffic flow. To do this, curbing will be re-aligned and sections of the paved roadway will be widened to accommodate traffic flow. The curbing re-alignment will also facilitate easier turning for commercial vehicles traveling westbound from Springfield Street northbound onto Stony Hill Road.
Community Impact
- Safety Improvements: The goal of the redesign is to reduce accidents and near miss accidents at the intersection.
- Accessibility Upgrades: The addition of sidewalks and crosswalks will make the area more pedestrian-friendly.
- Traffic Efficiency: The new turn lane and signal upgrades will help alleviate congestion, particularly during peak hours.
